Santa Barbara, California native Dylan Quinlivan has always been an entrepreneur with a sharp eye for spotting new opportunities. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania he relocated to Europe, and in 1992 launched a successful magazine publishing business, Focus Ediciones, with headquarters in Madrid, Spain. Focus went on to publish 15 magazine titles and 5 websites while employing over 350 staff and collaborators.
At Focus, Dylan gained extensive experience of graphic and fashion design through work on his lifestyle and luxury goods magazines. The top quality design of these publications was a key factor to winning the highly sought-after ARI Awards (The National Magazine Awards) for Best New Launch 2007 and Best Magazine of the Year 2008, both running across all magazine segments. Dylan ’s ability to create exceptional design and marketing campaigns culminated in the winning of the coveted Advertising Association Award for Best Advertising Campaign of the year 2008 – the first time a magazine publisher media group had ever won this honor, traditionally awarded to multi-national consumer brand products.
When Dylan sold his interests in the company in 2009, Focus Ediciones was the undisputed market leader in the men’s lifestyle and luxury goods industry in the Spanish marketplace.
At this time, back in California, Dylan purchased a set of magnetic ‘beads’ in a local retail shop, spawning the evolution of a new and creative concept. Sure, the challenge of launching an innovative accessories business and becoming a player in the fashion industry was daunting, however, Dylan had always been eager to develop a fashion brand, and this concept seemed like an excellent opportunity to pursue that goal.
Dylan brainstormed with top stylists, photographers, artists and graphic designers in an effort to further develop his concept. With access to a core team of experienced professionals, all of whom he had worked with in his previous career, Dylan believed that his chances of building a successful brand was absolute. Dylan also brought in friend DJ O’Neal of Hub Strategy, a San Francisco-based creative advertising agency that has a reputation for innovative approaches to brand building and has serviced a top-shelf client list that boasts Google and Microsoft. DJ recognized the potential of the business but urged Dylan to seek out an experienced and respected Industrial Designer to help take the product to the next level.
Dylan was referred to and ultimately hired Eric Pfeiffer, an award-winning designer renowned for his stylish quality product design. Pfeiffer developed the circular and rectangular charms – or ‘CLIX’ – that would be eventually become the first design elements of the jewelry that would combine with the silver-plated magnetic bracelet – the ‘LINX’.
The creative work also brought Dylan back to Spain to reconnect with a long-time colleague, renowned graphic designer Ricardo Feriche, whoultimately became the primary developer of the original, alluring and colorful designs for The LUX Collection, the company’s first product line for the Spring 2011 season.
To complete the core group, Dylan teamed up with fellow ‘Santa Barbarian’ Craig Peus, an investment banker and serial entrepreneur, who became Chief Operating Officer in 2010 to spearhead the venture.
In short, the group worked together for nearly a year researching the art of magnetism, exploring complementary materials, testing various methods of printing and production, and proposing and reviewing numerous design concepts. Ultimately, the team created ULINX: a truly innovative, elegant, fun and fully-customizable jewelry product.
Aside from the core ULINX team, the women in Dylan ’s life, including sister, celebrity stylist Linda Medvene, and mother, interior decorate and artist, Barbara, and daughters, Victoria and Emma have greatly influenced the ULINX Jewelry product. Their creative senses and styles have helped guide Dylan through the process of developing ULINX from a mere concept to a product that people are wearing today.
ULINX Jewelry offers an entirely different design experience for fashion-forward, contemporary women. The collections enable each user to develop their own unique ‘look and feel’, designs that suit each individual’s style but can be customized easily and as often as one changes mood.
